not sure if this is a stupid question…but if i am only able to get a disk of an earlier version of os x (10.5.x, x<6)…will i be able to upgrade to the most recent version easily?
Hi Adam
I am afraid I can’t answer that question. My Mac knowledge is only a few days old
Try the forum. And perhaps you can share your findings here with us.
Cheers!
so it seems that it is possible ONLY if the os was purchased retail…if it came with a mac, then it isnt possible.
I copied the osinstall.mpkg over in transmac, but when I mount the USB drive and cd /, nothing shows. Any ideas?
Well I finally got it copied over (syntax error) but when I go to customize, “Essential System Software” does not have a drop-down option
Hi, thanks for pointing out the following. I will make modify the article now to make sure everyone can follow it to the dot.
-When you copy OSInstall.mpkg over, you have directory names (/volume/system etc.) in lowercase. The first letter of these need to be in uppercase (ie /Volume/System/ etc).
-The OSinstall.mpkg that you link to is named “osinstall.mpkg” vice “OSInstall.mpkg” If you leave the name lowercase, it will not work…..that’s why I wasn’t getting the essential system software expansion.
Hope this can help someone as well.
Reinstall Itune 8.11, install Divx player, install Office 2008 ( custom to only World, Excel, powerpoint), install yahoo messenger for mac.
Much easier installation of OS X on an 8gb SSD, $199+2gb ram
1) Using MSIWINDOSX86.ISO DVD in USB DVD drive, hit 0 choose boot from DVD
2) Repartition the drive as a GUID partition table, then erase to FAT then to Mac OS X Extended (journaled) during install.
3) Go to custom, De-select: addional fonts, X11, Kernel, MAC OS X combined update (minus 1.7gb), Reboot, delete program such as mail, ical, ichat, itune,
4) Go to /System/Library/Speech/Voices and remove all voices except Fred. Delet all foreign dictionaries in /Library/Dictionaries, Empty your trash. ,… Now your system is 10.5.
5) Download and run monolingual. – Choose Monolingual -> Preferences and check the /System box under Architectures and the Strip debug info when removing architectures box. – Check everything in languages except for english and delete them. – Select everything in Architectures except for Intel and delete them.
6) Download the 10.5.6 combo update from apples website (not the auto update) or iDeneb 10.5.6 combo upgrade (this what I use). Run update ( if it tells you that you don’t have enough space ( 2.1gb), don’t woory, just click several times, then it will update. (Mine is 1.8gb left, before Combo update, since you deleted mail iTune, it will not update that) and re-boot.
7) ) Run dellefi1.1 Final ( don’t use 1.2) and reboot again, then run Monolingual again and delete unwanted programs.
9) Hit 2 for config bios, disable legacy USB support for sleep to work.
10) Now you have 700mb to 800mb space left and 100% Mac mini 9. Never have problem with reboot, and I have disabled bootload ( hide bootload). Now you have Safari,Itune, Firfox, Office 2008, Yahoo messenger, Divx player in your mini, just save other things in your SD card. You can deselect automatic update in software update (Mac OS, Itune, Office, ).
Hi, thank you so much for your contribution.
Hello,
Iv’e been trying for hours now to get this to install. Iv’e gotten to the part where I enter Terminal and look for my OSInstall.mpkg. However, it does not show up. Iv’e typed exactly as shown with the “-u -w /dev/disk2s3″ then “cd /” but nothing shows up.
Anything I could be doing wrong? When I put your version of OSinstall.mpkg, I simply dragged it into the right hand column of Transmac under my HFS+Volume folder. It doesn’t matter where I put it, correct?
I’m also using DellMiniBoot123v8.01 since my copy of osx is 10.5.0.
@Colin,
In Terminal, type: ls (terminal code for seeing current directory). cd / doesn’t show anything, but will send you to root of the mounted drive. Hope that helps.
@Vince. Hey, I’ve followed your step by step (excellent for the most part btw), but I’ve had constant trouble — right now, I’m stuck at implementation step 32 — I press restart and leave the two USB still plugged in, but it doesn’t go to OSX — instead it boots up the BootUp USB drive and asks for me to select an OS again (implementation step 8). Am I supposed to select the HDD where OSX is installed? (But when I select it, it goes to gray screen with mouse cursor and that’s it). Sorta lost from this point on. Little help here.
Hi Adrian,
Let’s do this for your case:
Between Step 31 and 32:
Remove the link USB drives (both of them), then boot up the system again.
After the system boots up into OSX and you see the desktop, put back the USB drives. The drive icon will appear on your desktop.
Carry on with Step 33.
Let me know how it goes
Ok, managed to get it to boot into OS X by leaving 5,6,7 and 8 checked in the customize part of the install. It made the install a bit heavier but by running Xslimmer I’ve got 1.88Gb free so far.
1.98Gb with running StripPPC
Hello,
I’m about to embark into the journey of the “project mini leopard” and I was wondering which kind of cd-drive I should buy in order to avoid the 8Gb flash drive method. I was also wondering if the steps would be similar to the 8Gb version of the dell mini as opposed to the 16Gb.
I can’t help you on this Dave as I did everything from scratch WITHOUT the CD drive
